At the core of his practice is an original project featuring his compositions, developed for a collaborative small ensemble. The music draws on swing, blues and modern jazz influences, combining structured writing with open improvisation and group interplay.
Now based in Melbourne, James continues to present his work to growing audiences, with performances at venues including The Jazzlab and Lazybones Lounge. His live sets offer an engaging and dynamic exploration of contemporary jazz grounded in tradition.

Comedy Clothes Swap
Part comedy show, part clothes swap, Comedy Clothes Swap is the event for people who need a wardrobe refresh and a laugh. Bring along the clothes that you no longer wear, swap them for something new-to-you and watch a line-up of comedians sharing the stories behind the items of clothing they most desperately need to ditch.
How does it work?
Bring along up to 10 items that you want to swap and while we're sorting through them, you enjoy the comedy show! When the show wraps up, the clothes swapping begins.
Why clothes swap?
If you haven't been to a clothes swap before, they are outrageously fun. You bring along excellent things that don't work for you - maybe they don't quite fit, they're not your colour or they're not your style anymore. Let your impulse purchases and early 2000s rave days be someone else's image makeover. That lime green tube top that washed you out will highlight another swapper's eyes. Your trash era becomes their treasure. It's like an op shop but without the weirdly high 2026 prices. Or like trading in your stuff at a consignment store, but without the judgment.

Kier Stevens *Free Gig* 6pm
Nestled halfway between the blues rock bombast of Ash Grunwald and the genre-mixing folk-roots wizardry of Jeff Lang, Australian steel guitarist KIER STEVENS knits together a raucous weave of hurtful hollering and gutsy guitar work that can take you from old-timey acoustic blues sounds to screaming steel solos and black ballads and then back home via exotic improvisations.
Sometimes sober listeners at venues and festivals (including Tanglewood, Matsumura, Renaissance, MONA, and MordiFest), have variously described his original compositions as bung blues, dirty swamp rock, and even psychedelic bluegrass.
Originally hailing from Hobart, KIER STEVENS is now a regular fixture on the Melbourne music scene writing and performing with several original music acts on dobro, guitar, and pedal steel.

Wobbly Boots Old Time String Band *Free Gig* 8pm
Join us in the Clubroom for our Folk & Fiddle Night!
Appalachian mountain music without modern complications. Melbourne’s own charismatic old time band The Wobbly Boots are a collection of much loved musicians from various cherished local and national acts; Peter Holmes on banjo (‘The Ramshackle Band, Headbelly Buzzrds’), Andy Reid on washboard (‘The Band Who Knew Too Much’), Tom Bob & Matt Rodd on guitar and mandolin (‘Shaky Stills’), Charlie Sanford on fiddle (‘Gob Iron Cajon Band, Merri Creek Tavern Sessions’), Andrew La Blanc on double bass (‘Burning Bridges, The Cajun Aces’) …list goes on :)
Known for being local identities on Melbourne's premiere live music strip, High St Northcote, The Wobbly Boots’ four year residency at the Westpac is still on every Friday night all year round.
Seemingly a busking outfit, they prefer to entertain for the greater sake of humanity, generous in nature, singing original local tales and vintage standards in the acoustic street forum. Six part choruses and harmonies add to the singing, bowing, plucking and strumming of this old time string band’s genuine atmosphere.

Annie-Rose Maloney *Free Gig* 8:30pm
Annie-Rose Maloney will be bringing her unmistakable voice and quietly powerful songwriting to the stage as part of April's Brunswick Socials with Country Struts, performing at the Quadraphonics Club on April 30th, following the evening's boot scooting.
Annie-Rose Maloney writes country-ish music about the deep kernels of pain we all carry around in our pockets. Fast becoming an alt-folk favourite in the Australian scene, Annie-Rose has already supported the likes of Angel Olsen, Hurray For The Riff Raff, Andy Shauf and Angie McMahon, despite having only released her debut album ‘Circle Walking' in February 2025.
Raised on Wadawurrung Country with a piano in the house and a granny who yodelled at bedtime, Annie-Rose grew up inspired by the likes of K.D.Lang's ‘Hymns of the 49th Parallel', The Be Good Tanyas and The Waifs. After she played a single One Day International (ODI) for the Australia women's cricket team against India in July 2011, she started and ended her first award-winning band, Murdena, before spending the last decade honing her solo project - only now coming into fruition.
Annie-Rose has a simple ethos when it comes to writing a song. It must have a pulse, it must feel nice to sing, and it must bear a truthfulness about our human experiences. Her assured presence holds the audience gently as they move through moments of heartbreak, loneliness and elation.

Moonee Valley Drifters *Free Gig* 6pm
Join us in the Clubroom for our Country Night!
BEST OF THE MOONEE VALLEY DRIFTERS VOL 1
Along with our mutual love of Western Swing Tom and the Moonee Valley Drifters have introduced me and many others to the joys and sorrows of the Louvin Brothers, Lefty Frizzell, George Jones and Brenda Lee. People even said when they played OUT ON THE WEEKEND they bring the real roots of country to Melbourne. They bring the love of the song, a respect for the great feeling that country is capable of and the release created by dancing – all central to the origins of the music, its people's music. The band features John ‘Dude' Brockton on drums/vocals, Rob Grenville vocals and the Gibson, and Ian McDonald on double bass and Tom Forsell on vocals and various instruments. They also feature Gerard Rowan on steel and me on piano.
The MOONEE VALLEY DRIFTERS ‘Hill & Range Music' or BEST OF THE MOONEE VALLEY DRIFTERS VOLUMN 1 are out now a whole Bag of styles.
So celebrate the music of Tom Forsell and the Moonee Valley Drifters. James Black
