Melbourne Jazz Project presents: James Shortland

James Shortland is a Melbourne-based jazz bassist, composer and bandleader whose work bridges the traditions of African American jazz with a contemporary Australian voice. As both a sideman and leader, he has established himself as an emerging presence within the national jazz scene, known for his strong musical direction, lyrical improvisation and commitment to original music.

A graduate of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, James studied under leading Australian musicians including Craig Scott, Kevin Hunt, Judy Bailey, Warwick Alder and Andrew Dickeson. He has since performed with a range of respected artists such as Dale Barlow, Julien Wilson, John Harkins, Andy Sugg and James Bowers, experiences that have shaped his approach to ensemble playing and composition.

At the core of his practice is an original project featuring his compositions, developed for a collaborative small ensemble. The music draws on swing, blues and modern jazz influences, combining structured writing with open improvisation and group interplay.

Now based in Melbourne, James continues to present his work to growing audiences, with performances at venues including The Jazzlab and Lazybones Lounge. His live sets offer an engaging and dynamic exploration of contemporary jazz grounded in tradition.
